America discovers Die Antwoord

Next big thing in the US.

Die Antwoord

Kameraad Mhambi noticed quite a traffic spike on the site today. And after further inspection, it would seem that some Americans on the Vanilla Vinyl Board have discovered Die Antwoord. :)

Some more comments on Die Antwoord. Note, they don’t quite know what to make of it!

This shit creeps me out and makes me feel uneasy and unsettled.

i am in awe

ICP meets tatu meets the streets

What happens when Eminem meets with Aqua and Aphex Twin?

the people in this video look really weird

Is that Afrikaans?

Answering my own question with google: Yes.

Kinda way into the fact that my first encounter with a new language is from a rave-rap song or whatever the hell this is.

Anyone here speak Dutch? Are you able to make out some of the words?

PS: You can now follow Die Antwoord on Twitter.

The spike in traffic come indirectly from their video Zef Side on Youtube that I uploaded.

I get comments streaming in on the hour.

    Yes,

Americans don’t know what to make of it. Just like all art, they don’t what to make of it until they put a price on it and take it home.

Oz, not all of us Americans are as superficial as you may believe.

As an American woman living in Saginaw, Michigan, USA, I thought that I should relay to the readers here that some friends of mine discovered Die Antwoord on the internet and their music has been a growing element in the local chatter here in Saginaw.

Some of their tracks were even played over the sound system at a local bar between bands last week.

I think that one reason their popularity is growing here in the USA is because to us, they represent the crossing of boundaries between culture and ethnicity and economic status, which is still a prevalent issue in most cities in our country. They also seem to represent the struggle that can be encountered and overcome when you want to create something that crosses those boundaries, and that you should strive on even in the face of anyone who questions or criticizes you for doing so.

In other words, make art that makes people stop and think and fuck the haters.

My city is a small working-class city with a rotten economy, plentiful blight, and clashing cultures. Similar to many other cities all across the world, no matter what country they are in.

Anything that encourages a person to see past all of that is pretty cool in my book.
