New Pepsi add for South Africa World Cup

March 1st, 2010 · 5 Comments · art & culture

Shifting the goal posts? Sent to me by my friend Murray Hunter, what do you make of it? One comment from me, that Djembe in the shot is not South African. South Africa does not have Djembe’s. And where’s the Vuvuzela’s?

Africans have such great rhythm, hey? And SO community-spirited. Oh, and I love how they cleverly put their markets FAR away from anywhere that people actually, you know, live.

Uh, pre-emptive caveat in case someone earnest misinterpets me: the above=sarcasm.

Nice they’ve shown the true spirit of Africa, Lie cheat and steal in everything we do. This world cup has two extremes.

    1) A great success

    or

    2) A great stuff up

This is so funny! Full of problematic stereotypes and huge issues of representation, but very funny, perhaps partly because of that.
