A minor scuffle eschewed, and my fathers wife, a formidable woman pushed at least one attacker (who was scrawny and young) across a table.

My fathers wife said that just yesterday she received a text message that last night whites were to be slaugthered. (This kind of SMS does the rounds quite regularly in South Africa). So when she came out of the bathroom and was jumped, she got an awful fright. Perhaps this time the SMS was right? It was not.

But for a few bruises, and a blue eye my father has, they are fine. My father, who speaks fluent Zulu spoke to the two young attackers and asked them what they wanted. Money was the answer.

And after they got it they were off.

The police and neighbors were very helpful.

Considering the recent reports of mindless violence that accompanied house breaking in South Africa, they were lucky.

My father refers to where they live, a security village, as a prison.

The PAC has come under fire after messages urging the killing of whites were posted on its Facebook site.

The party says it will not remove the offending posts.

The messages, which said an army of about 3 000 people was standing by, ready to kill white people within 24 hours if requested to do so, were still on the site after a Facebook user alerted the administrator to the messages.

Independent media analyst and Facebook user Martin Slabbert said he had asked the posters and site administrator Anwar Adams, who is the PAC’s provincial interim chairman, to remove the messages.

“I did a similar thing during the election campaign when a group was started named ‘Let’s assassinate (DA leader) Helen Zille’, and the group was removed,” Slabbert said.

Adams posted a message on the site yesterday thanking posters, but urged them not to stoop to the level of whites in their debate “for we are a better people”.

Well Kameraad Mhambi did a quick search and Mr Adams also has things to say about Israel, Zionists, and Jews. Now I also think that Israel is everything but squeaky clean in the way it engages Palestinians, but this is beyond the pale.

I had a good cry. Chris hitch-hiked with us to Tanzania, Chris gave me lifts down the Ben Schoeman highway on his superbike. He celebrated the first year of post apartheid on the Union building lawns, he was a camera man, he did light shows. Chris was an attractive soul with a lust for life. Only last year he criss-crossed Africa on a bike, from Pretoria to Spain.

We are not sure why this happened now. A week before, Deon Haumann, a VJ and friend he had been working with, died after a gruesome motor accident.

Want to hazard a guess what to voting amounts and percentages were?

Just to set the scene for a quick comparison in terms of the size of the vote The Mail & Guardian has had a poll up about security and the World Cup after the attack in Cabinda Angola. The poll has already been up for the last three days. Here it is-

Yesterday I wrote about Pik’s call for a new Great Trek. It was’nt a trek to a Volkstaat mind you. It was for a Trek -

“om die land se swart regering te oortuig dat ons mekaar nodig het om ons land te laat slaag.”

A trek to convince the government that we need each other for the country to work.

I suspect Pik is still wedded to the idea of a unitary South Africa. But it would seem that many in the Volk, especially in the North have moved on already.

Is a kind of Volkstaat what Breyten meant when he talked about a newly formulated South Africa?

“This means that conversations, fueled by a moral and practical imagination, about the necessity of a newly formulated South Africa – based in a functioning federal system of states, with equal rights and opportunities for all at all levels, should be created.”

I doubt Breyten himself has a clear idea about what he meant.

Notice that 56% said they would consider living in a Volkstaat.

In the 1990′s the Conservative party and the HNP – who claimed all of SA belonged to the Afrikaners – were the mainstays of conservative opinion, and the Nats had already become party of English South Africa as well. The likes of Karel Boshof, the Volkstater, was seen as crazy. And a bit soft.

At the University of Pretoria that I attended there were two groups of right wingers. There was the Christiaan van Merwe types of far right-wingers. Van der Merwe’s father was a prominent Conservative party politician.

A distasteful lot for the most part and they formed the nucleus of the group that believed that all of SA should be white. Then there were the likes of Willie Spies and Kallie Kriel, who were Volkstaters.

Willie was a person that commanded respect. Quite unlike Van der Merwe devoid of bombastic arrogance and belligerence. Kallie I don’t know that well. But both of them are playing significant roles today in Afrikaner politics. Willie in the Vryheidsfront and Kallie in Afriforum.

It looks like their message is finding fertile ground.

A couple of thousand of Beeld’s readers said that they won’t consider living in a Volkstaat, and some said it depends.

Last Wednesday I attended a talk by Slavoj Zizek, one of the most celebrated and entertaining modern intellectuals. Zizek wants to rehabilitate Marxism and even Stalinism, at least and only in the spheres of environmental degradation and bio-technology he says. Or at least that is what I understood him saying.

Zizek also wants to rehabilitate ideology in general, or at least make us aware that our current post-ideological world is an insidious kind of ideology itself, even stronger and harder to challenge because it is unaware of itself in a way that that other ideologies like that of psychoanalysis, fascism and Marxism is not. It is an ultimate truth, the most dangerous kind of ideology. Zizek wants us to go back to ideologies with isms, isms ate ideologies that dare speak its name.

But what is ideology? Mirriam webster defines it as:

1 : visionary theorizing
2 a : a systematic body of concepts especially about human life or culture b : a manner or the content of thinking characteristic of an individual, group, or culture c : the integrated assertions, theories and aims that constitute a sociopolitical program

Zizek has a great way of demonstrating how today’s ideology works. He points to Donald Rumsveld’s Iraq wat statement on what we know. Rumsveld said in response to questions about why weapons of mass destruction had not been found yet that there are known knowns – things we know we know. there are known unknowns – things we know we don’t know. And then there’s unknown unknowns – things we don’t know that we don’t know.

Zizek points out that Rumsveld missed a fourth combination. Unknown knowns – things we don’t know that we know. That is modern ideology and causes us to make mistakes like the Iraq War.
