Please could re-calculate your quantities and averages (being almost a year since April 2010), as I am reading the newspaper every day, and I can reassure you that your statistics are out of date, incomplete and paint a grossly unrealistic picture of the truth.
The situation is far worse.
And if one farmer feeds an average of 1200 people per year, then with one farmer killed every day of the year, 427 200 more individuals are left without food per year.
The recent mealie crisis not raising concerns not evident enough?

Hey Peter, I think I over egged the negativity in this post. A writer on Twitter - Richard de Nooy - Tweeted that writing is making a mountain out of a molehill. So this is part a polemic. I am actually a bit of a techno utopian myself. :)

So why did I write this? Well I think the internet is genuinely very disruptive. I do for example not only think the that ME uprisings would have been different without social media, it's more than just plausible that without it, both Mubarak and Ben Ali would still be in power. I also think that although there might be new hierarchies, they are qualitatively different than the old.

My gripe is with the unreflective thinking you often find amongst the tech set - we cant take what we have for granted granted. The Ideology I refer to largely has had positive outcomes on the internet, but it has two (related) problems. Techies tend to think that technology just is, and forget how important design (functional specifications, UI and UX and law) decisions are in shaping it. My fear is if we are not on our guard the potential of the net can be diluted. My second gripe is with the silly belief that markets just always are efficient, which is pervasive.

So yes, I was a bit contrarian, but hopefully not crying wolf.

@Mk "Hendrik Verwirrt" translates into "Hendrik who is nuts" in the language that afrikaans is based on = German!

Since this guy was really nuts - recreating the Nuremburg race laws in a country who`s populatiion in predominantly african is nothing that somebody who has a sane mind is likely to do - i use this nickname for your little version of Hitler!

I'm not interested whether your forefathers robbed the from the indigenous people 10 generations ago or 3 generations ago. Its the continuation of their state of mind in your generation that worries me!

That's a really in-depth post. I think I follow your central argument (that we're not reaching a Californian Ideological techno-utopia). Mostly, I love the threads you've pulled together. I must say, however, I'm less pessimistic. Perhaps, without pigeon-holing your argument any more than I already have(!), I could put it like this: I'm not part of a movement that saw the birth of the net as offering a different kind of (non-hierarchical) society; I saw it as offering a different degree of (less hierarchical, more networked, more noisy) access to certain benefits of being a part of society. As such, to take just one example of your new order resembling the old, I'm not surprised at celebrities promoting brands - its something they did before the web was born and I'm no more or less interested now than then. But before the net, I couldn't blog my thoughts and end up in a conversation like this, that anyone else at all could join if they liked. That's different, if not in kind, then by degree. And I do see brands building communities based on that. It's just that they aren't as loud as the 'discounters', so they are less visible to outsiders. It's down to systemic preferential attachment again...

@Ike, may I refer you to my statement to Afrikola; you don't know me! Make as many assumptions as you wish. By the way, it is Hendrik Verwoerd. You know neither where I have been nor what the level of melanin in my skin is. I can't rebut blind hatred, its an exercise in futility, as is your attempt to claim any sort of upperhand regarding experience and first hand knowledge over a born and bred South African with at least 10 generations of family from Africa. Why don't you better spend your time trying to prove that Beethoven was black or the Egyptians, Greeks and whatever else because I tire of responding to your inanity.

@ Mk (great nickname by the way: Viva Umkhonto We Sizwe!)

My connection to South Africa is very real! I guess i have been to places in South Africa you will never dare to visit, places that represent the life-realities of the majority of South Africans (those you do not represent since you seem to be the advocate Hendrik Verwirrts policies)!

Its funny how you weren't able to reply with any rational arguments once again and i guess this will not stop you from repeating this pattern again and again - since you lack any decency!

The only thing you proof is that sometimes melanine deficiency equals deficiency in intellect!
